Knight, author of Female Action Heroes: A Guide to Women in Comics, Video games, Film, and Television wrote that "two defining aspects of her persona are her racial identity and her social status as a mutant.
The framework was laid first by Chris Claremont, who fleshed out her backstory in Uncanny X-Men and Before the Storm and Storm vol. When Ororo is six months old, she and her parents move to the Egyptian capital of Cairo.
Five years later, during the Suez Crisisa fighter jet crashes into her parents' house, killing them. Buried under tons of rubble, Ororo survives but is orphaned and left with intense claustrophobia. By doing this, she threw off the natural order of nature, and droughts were formed over numerous villages, and hundreds of animals were killed. Sensing the damage she had done, Ainet told Storm of her kind but ill-thought-out gesture, and of the damage she caused. Ainet took this opportunity to explain to Ororo how her powers worked with nature, and how she could fix the problem by properly distributing rain. She briefly became "Rogue Storm", and even switched bodies with the White Queen.Black Panther The Animated Series - Storm
It is here that she meets Wolverine's old friend Yukioand the two become fast friends. Storm is inspired by Yukio, who encourages Storm to embrace her emerging darker side.
This leads Storm to drastically change her outward appearance to match her inner self and thus don her iconic punk drab. Cyclops reminds her that she made him choose between family and duty before, and she needs to make the same decision.
Storm reacts by returning to Wakanda to face a despondent Black Panther, with the two seemingly falling out with each other, although it is later revealed that the Black Panther has been possessed by the Shadow King. After being forced to drive him out by striking Cyclops through the chest with a massive lightning bolt, the Shadow King then took control of Storm, only to be devoured in vengeance by Bast, the Panther God, who had agreed to hide inside of Storm's mind in order to take revenge on the Shadow King for possessing T'Challa.

However, there was a deeply political side of the couple's relationship. As a high-profile mutant, Ororo's union with the king gave her a definitive stage to advocate for mutant rights. Wakanda was one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, after all.
Storm was extremely dedicated to her work at Professor Xavier's school, while T'Challa was similarly fiercely protective and passionate about his country, Wakanda. Though married, Black Panther and Storm spent most of their marriage on separate missions. Their separate passions and storylines also made writing them into the same place difficult. This caused strain on their marriage and on the writers. However rushed, the marriage between T'Challa and Ororo was the coupling of the two most respected and revered black superheroes.

To see them happily come together and succeed as one was a big deal for many African American readers. Even more, regardless of opinions on their marriage, the event itself was rich with African culture and celebration.
One such time, Wakanda was attacked by Namor, the king of Atlantis, while he was possessed by the Phoenix Force. Normally, Wakanda was highly defensible.
With its power extended outward to help the Captain America side of the war, however, the attack devastated the country. Between this and the X-Men vs. Avengers event, a heartbroken Black Panther lashed out and annuled his marriage with Storm while she was away. She was only given notice when she came back to try to help put Wakanda back together.
He asked her to leave, saying their marriage was over. While the couple remained friends, their romance never recovered. The logic behind their relationship was to pair two very strong heroes together. However, Storm and Black Panther both had separate comics. It became hard to give the two equal weight and have them appear in the same places. The inability to make one a supporting character instead of a hero hurt their relationship. Under Claremont's reasoning, their marriage falling apart was for the best for their hero careers.
With patience and the rights hands, and some more build-up before rushing to the alter, the two could really hit it off. Both are strong, regal, respected characters with a devotion to their past and traditions. Therefore their similarities in their beliefs could greatly outweigh the things going against them. Ta-Nehisi Coates, famous author of Between the World and Me, mantled a Black Panther series in which the couple shares romantic feelings once more.
The series ran for 11 issues from There's a possibility to keep the romance consistent and growing, however, as Coates has been in talks to helm a Storm comic series as well. The two connect only to play chess and be colleagues in the superhero business. T'Challa has backed off and only wishes the best for Storm.
He even encourages her to find love-- that is, as long as its not Wolverine. The King of Wakanda states Logan as the one and only person who he doesn't want Storm to be with. Of course, that hardly means Storm heeds his request. He broke her heart, after all. His reasons were understandable, though. Because of his love for Ororo, he left his city less defended against Namor and the Phoenix Force. He, the king, aided in his land's decimation. Furthermore, his queen was away and wasn't there to help defend Wakanda's people.
While cruel, T'Challa felt betrayed and abandoned.
